The scratch team opened their account with an impressive victory over a very strong Moortown side. The team for the night was Ross Andrew, Ryan Green making his debut and Tom Hough. What can only be described as biblical rain for 40 minutes before tee off the match did well to go ahead but the greens held up very well. First out was Tom taking on their main man off Plus 3, a double bogey wasn’t the ideal start for Tom who then quickly settled and began to put his opponent under real pressure finding fairways and greens. Tom kicked on around the turn and after 15 was dormy 3 with a guaranteed point secured, a superb iron shot into 16 saw his opponent concede the hole giving Ponte their first points of the season and a massive scalp for Tom! Second out was scratch team captain Ross, halving the first hole with a birdie was the beginning of a tough match, which was nip and tuck until the 11th which saw him go 1 down and quickly 2 down after 12 which kicked Ross into gear getting back level after 14. A superb birdie by his opponent on 16 meant Ross was 1 down with two to play. A superb iron shot to 10 feet was enough to win 17 and get back to all square with it all to play for on 18. An excellent 2 putt from off the green and over a bank saw Ross claim 2 points and seal a Pontefract victory. Last out was Ryan Green making his Monday night debut not given an easy task taking on an established plus 1 handicap player. Ryan did his best to hang in but with his opponent making birdies and rarely making a mistake saw him 3 down after 9 holes and a tough task ahead to save the match which sadly he could not recover from losing his match 5&3. Monday 24th May sees the Scratch Team at home to Wakefield Golf Club and it would be great to see some of the members out there supporting the team.
